PRINCIPLE NO. 17 Provide Buffer Systems for Streams
Create a variable width buffer system along all perennial streams that also encompasses critical environmental features such as floodplains, steep slopes, and freshwater wetlands.
Notes:
Although stream or aquatic buffers are essential watershed protection elements, they are often not encouraged or required as part of new development projects. This principle recommends utilizing a three-zone buffer system that includes a streamside zone, a middle zone, and an outer zone. These three zones are distinguished by the types of allowable uses. In addition, buffers should be expanded to include the 100 year floodplain, steep slopes, and freshwater wetlands to fully protect the overall stream quality.
