Extreme Flood Events
Flood plains are operationally defined as the land area within the 100-year storm flow
As with overbank floods, development can dramatically increase flooding frequency
Flood plains provide natural flood storage and attenuation of flows
All new development in most areas is highly restricted in flood plains
Past development has occurred in flood plains and may warrant protection
Notes:
Extreme flood events, such as the 100 year storm, can cause damage, particularly where the floodplain has been developed. In most places, new development is restricted within the 100 year floodplain, but pre-existing structures may need to be protected.
