#11 Embankment Specifications - I
Design and construct in a manner to prevent dam breach or seepage (exact criteria depend on local requirements or NEH dam safety criteria)
Minimum top width of 10 feet (or 16’ to 26’ if it is a roadway embankment)
Increase dam height to account for settlement (often 5 to 10 %)
Provide cutoff trench and impervious core located along centerline of dam
Notes:
Similar to emergency spillways, it is important to be familiar with the local regulations and requirements pertaining to dam safety. Requirements often vary depending on dam classification. Key considerations to be aware of are provided on the next two slides.
