One of the most apparent changes to habitat in urban streams is the dramatic loss of large woody debris (LWD). LWD is important in a stream because it provides habitat structure and allows the stream to retain sediments, nutrients, and carbon more effectively. In urban streams, the increased stormwater flows and narrower riparian zones provide less large woody debris.
